Anja Kersten - Art Films, Short Films

As a performance artist, improviser and actress I have created quite a few films over the years; art films, performance art pieces, short films, as well as the other odd, experimental ones. Most of them have been created by means of improvisation. Sometimes completely on my own and often in collaboration with other artists.

Just gonna walk away 2019

Through lucky circumstances I got to know Paul L. Clark, when traveling Canada. He was looking for a performance artist for this particular music piece. We only had one afternoon to make this happen, improvising our way through. It was a delightful collaboration.

Inside 2016

When I was invited to a wedding on Inish More, Ireland, I stumbled by accident across an ancient beehive and happened to have a camera with me. Basically I just was playing around, improvising in the spur of the moment. This art film is the result.

Cassandra 2011

In collaboration with artist Caro Woods, who did the camera work, I was able to create this art film. I did develop the story line, but we did not work with a story board. We rather let things develop intuitively and improvised a lot. Cassandra is about a woman caught in between two worlds, trying to find out where she really belongs.

Frank & Kate 2013

Short Film

Frank & Kate has been shown at the Film Festival Cornwall 2013. There was a basic idea for the characters and subject, but most of the scenes have been improvised. This was a collaboration with photographer Tony Brown.

Home is where you are / Rage

Both performance art films deal with the force of anger, but in very different ways. ‘Rage’ was a collaboration with Jordan Jackson, whereas ‘Home is where you are’ was created all on my own, without even a camera man at hand.

I am fear

Due to an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s I am dealing with quite a bit of anxiety at times, which inspired this performance art film. The poem has been written and spoken by writer Rachel Rouncefield.
