Stepping into our power as artists
Stepping into our power as artists means we’re not holding back anymore. We’re not governed by ‘Shoulds’ when creating. I’m not saying that this inner voice, which has a lot of opinions, when we are doing our art isn’t there anymore.
Mine still very much is talking to me:
‘This is too whimsical, can’t be taken seriously, bla, bla, bla fill in the blank’
But it doesn’t mean I am changing my style or that I do my best to appear more like a professional artist, whatever that means. Or that I try to do something, which finally will be successful… lol.
For me personally stepping into my power as an artist is committing to creating independent of outer circumstances. Of course there will be times when life throws you a curveball and you get sidetracked. Still, when we manage to even express creatively in taxing times, things get easier in the sense that we feel less depressed. At least it’s been for me like this always. I literally can’t wait to be creative when I feel better. It’s quite the opposite. I create to feel better.
Another point for me personally is, that it’s not only about committing to creating, but also showing up with it regularly. In my case it means posting on Social Media. Art is there to be witnessed and shared. I make myself show up, even when I feel at times especially vulnerable about one of my latest ideas with my inner critic telling me:
‘Anja, really? How much more do you want to make a fool out of yourself?’
Funnily enough, that’s exactly it. Us artists (of all kinds) have always been a foolish bunch of people. Seriously why else did we become artists in the first place and not another hedge fund manager or whatever. The fool as an archetype is delightful because it gives us permission to be playful. The fool takes risks, listens to their instinct and doesn’t play by the rules of logic.
It’s a bit counterproductive being an artist, but wanting to avoid to look foolish at all costs! Foolish to whom anyways? To the people who are only interested in numbers and logic? Your art most likely will be lost to them anyways.
If you want to feel empowered as an artist, it’s essential to embrace the fool, stay true to what you really feel like expressing, versus how it will be received by others.
As long as we keep on creating, showing up, embracing the fool, inspiration and an experimental, curious mindset will be ours.
‘I wonder what happens, if I do…’
Another thing, which I believe is very important as creatives is to be in touch with the whole range of our emotions, nothing is off limits. When we are able to create mindfully from the wealth of our emotional being, wonderful art, that touches others deeply, can come to the surface.
When we come from this soul place as artists, when we show up authentically and express fully whatever our heart desires to create, than we are stepping into our power.
And that kind of power doesn’t care about success in the worldly sense, but rumour has it, that there might be a chance that success follows…
