Are you still waiting for the big magic shift in your life?

There’s many of us, dealing with longterm struggles, we would love to get rid off; once and for all. Somebody snap with their fingers and it’s done. Our own genie in the bottle coming to the rescue, wouldn’t it be great!

But do sudden magic shifts truly exist? Bam! The transformation miracle just happened, that’s it! Done and dusted.

We often hear stories of individuals waking up one day to find their entire world changed. A German filmmaker Clemens Kuby once documented a female shaman dancing with an addicted person, and miraculously, the addiction vanished.

Of course these kind of stories are fascinating! Opening the door to possibility, which at times even can’t be anticipated anymore. When someone feels depressed and anxious for example such transformative accounts might spent hope.

In my own experience though change has been more gradual. Looking back at 2023, I see a series of subtle shifts, each contributing to a larger transformation.

This contrasts with the overly promoted idea of a sudden, magical moment that alters everything. There’s for sure plenty of offers out there, based on chasing this very miracle!

I believe as a society, we place too much emphasis on the notion of a dramatic shift. Change usually isn’t that straight forward, nor is it linear. Often we have a part, that wants to move forward and another one resisting it.

We also tend to forget, that most successful people in any field had to put in massive effort, dealing with a lot of adversary to get there.

Take learning a language, for instance. My own attempts to improve my Portuguese often feel like three steps forward and one step back. Motivation crumbles, progress stalls, and setbacks occur.

We need to find the willingness to pick ourselves back up again after stumbling and to modify our behaviour once more.

When we invest too much in the expectation of the magic shift, reality can become very disappointing. To say the least. I think, there’s also the danger of waiting for something to happen versus taking many, small steps towards our goals.

For example, if we want to change a challenging belief ‘I never can be successful’, consistent effort is needed on our part. It’s not just our thoughts we need to change, but also finding appropriate actions to prove our believes might be simply wrong.

Guy Cashmore commented on my video with the same subject via Facebook the following:

‘I've had a very fortunate life so far but nothing has really ever happened magically or quickly. You sow seeds and sometimes they bear fruit decades later. The trick is to sow enough seeds that you are not afraid to abandon a few, the ones to nurture become obvious as the years pass by. I guess I'm a long term thinker and planner, not worrying too much about the small daily bumps in the road.’

Personally I believe, we mustn’t completely reject the possibility of a magic shift in our lives. It for sure would be healthy though, to mainly focus on baby steps towards the experiences we desire. We need to develop patience and compassion for our setbacks we inadvertently will experience along the way. Instead of only chasing the big, magic shift so many influencers, life coaches, gurus, self proclaimed experts have promised us.

So, what are your thoughts on this matter? Are you still waiting for the big magic shift in your life?
