Three things you need to know

Three things you need to know

There are three things you need to know, when you want to follow your own path, your vision of maybe being an artist, actor, entrepreneur etc.

Ready? Here they are!

  1. Stop trying to be like all the others. Stop shouting for attention and learn how to baffle your audience instead.

  2. By embracing our failures, we allow ourselves to keep on innovating and creating.

  3. The main danger is, when we don’t stop chasing. While we still may be aware of our original dream, it becomes stale, like fresh milk turned sour.

I have been coaching people for many years now, helping them to get their dream job, following their own vision and presenting themselves authentically in taxing situations.

I am a great coach, because I see things differently and I do the unexpected.

Today, I am revisiting three older blogposts, that will give you some insight into what it means to stay true to yourself, while finding your own purpose in life.

Supporting other people to be creative is as much part of my work, as being a performer, writer and filmmaker. That’s why I want to honour my past work in that area as well.

The three things I believe you need to know aren’t obvious, but vital in my opinion:

1. At the end of the day, you are far more interesting, when you stay true to yourself and do things your own way. Being the loudest, doesn’t always help.

My secret tip: Stop shouting for attention, learn how to baffle your audience instead

Here’s an extract:

‘Marlena’s little finger is whirling, like a whisk. As if she was beating egg yoke to perfection. I am transfixed by the evocative dance of her body. The swiss, red -curly, haired woman is telling a story.  A secret, only she knows. Every little movement counts. The shifting from one foot to the other, the slight raise of an eyebrow etc. Marlena is fully present. As if she had to translate simultaneously and couldn’t miss a single precious word, being spoken. The stillness turns into a silver lining, dancing through the room. Tickling the tips of our noses. We, her audience, are baffled and enchanted at the same time.

Marlena was the only one within our group of performers, who wasn’t shouting out loud:

’Look at me, look at me! See what I can do! I am here to impress you! I want your attention’

2. When you put yourself out there, you will have to deal with failure. It’s a good thing, if you know how.

Three things you need to know

Find out all about it in my blog post called: Why you need to navigate the darkness of failure wholeheartedly

Here’s an extract:

‘Don’t you want to run away for miles? From this ugly, slimy, green monster called failure, that is just about to summon you into its massive hand?

It’s hungry, it hasn’t eaten for a long time and it will gulp you down in one go. There will be nothing left of you, but a nasty belch! Bón Appetit!

So, who in their right mind would face up to such a monstrosity! Isn’t it much easier to let others do the dirty work? Let them move forward, stumble, face countless obstacles, challenges and failures? Isn’t it much better to let them fight for their life, like a gladiator in the arena, while we eat popcorn and watch with a critical eye?

Of course it is!

No problem, you’ve just assigned yourself to being a couch potatoe for the rest of your life. Dying the slow death of boredom! Every day is exactly the same! You wake up, hate the alarm clock, you go to work, hate work, you come back home, ignore your nagging wife and watch football instead.

Really? Come on! Let’s rather find out how to overcome failure, so that it doesn’t drag you in like a sack of potatoes. Let’s find out how to deal with failure without being defined by it.’

3. Yes, you want to follow your dream, but if you chase it too much, you’ll lose your original idea eventually.

Here’s an extract:

‘The pink elephant stands for our dreams, what we would like to do with our lives and who we would like to be in this world.

The main danger is, when we don’t stop chasing. While we still may be aware of our original dream, it becomes stale, like fresh milk turned sour.

We have forgotten what it actually looked like, what it really sounded like and what it truly tasted like.

Now we are running after the mere reflectin of the pink elephant. It’s shadow so to speak.

Could it be you wanted to be a writer, but forgot to write, being lost in someone else’s words, someone else’s books? Yes, you might be surrounded by great word concoctions, but your not using your own voice. You are chasing the faint image of a writer, that isn’t you.

Maybe you dreamed of traveling the world, selling your photos you’ve made, but now you’re surviving with event and wedding photography. You see yourself rather as a craftsman. You don’t think you’re an artist.’

Now, I have shared with you, what I believe are the three main ingredients in creating the life you want. Let me know, what you made of them!
